From a modest living room start-up operation to a global player

Many successful companies have small beginnings. Garage based start-ups are legendary. FLEXIM is no exception. The company, which by now is well established as a world renown manufacturer of measurement instrumentation, had its beginnings in the spring of 1990 as a risky endeavor in a rented apartment located in Berlin’s Friedrichshain district.

The situation in 1989 and 1990 was fluid in more ways than one. Angry demonstrators roamed the streets of Berlin, Leipzig and other major East German cities. With the fall of the Berlin wall a radically new world was opened with new possibilities and risks. Four graduates of Berlin’s Humboldt University and the University of Rostock discovered their entrepreneurial spirit. They decided to try their luck and apply their knowledge: On February 17th, 1990 they founded FLEXIM GmbH. The declared purpose of the company was the development and manufacture of ultrasonic flow instrumentation.

Top technology in the backyard

Today non-intrusive flow measurement is a well known and widely used technology. 20 years ago things were very different. Few of FLEXIM’s neighbours could have known at the time that world-class R&D was being conducted in the apartment next door. The business aspects of the new company were understood poorly. After all the founders did not grow up thinking in business concepts. Luckily this deficiency was more than made up by the subject matter at hand : ultrasonic flow measurement. This know-how came from Rostock University. Two of the company founders had studied ultrasonic flow measurement under flow guru Prof. Dr. Otto Fiedler. Under his guidance they had developed the first ultrasonic flow meter prototypes.

Right from the beginning the aim was set high: FLEXIM was to be a top-rated global player in its field. After 18 months of hard work the stage was set. The instrument developed was ready for prime time and the first model moved into production. During the 1991 Hannover fair the first unit was sold to a customer for use in Nepal. In spite of this rather high first installation FLEXIM has been moving up ever since. Model FLUXUS® ADM 6402 became a “benchmark” product even before this word entered the business world lingo.

Who would know better and first hand that one cannot rest on one’s laurels: FLEXIM was created in turbulent and changing times. FLEXIM’s owners understand that change is inevitable. This explains the company’s policy of investing above average sums in R&D in order to maintain the role of the technological leader. The envelope for ultra sound measurement applications was steadily expanded. Today FLEXIM leads the way in high temperature and gas flow measurement. The technology is now also used for process analysis applications such as non-intrusive concentration measurement.

In 2002 FLEXIM embarked on a new venture. FLEXIM products not only listen what is going on inside a pipe. They now look into the pipe as well. This is done with FLEXIM’s PIOX® refractometer series. Refractometers originated with Carl Zeiss in Jena, Germany. Back in 1872 Ernst Abbe manufactured the first critical-angle refractometer in Jena. PIOX® refractometers are the result of a cooperative agreement between FLEXIM and the Godat company which had grown out of the Carl Zeiss company. Godat contributed its refractometer expertise, FLEXIM the electronic signal processing portion to the new venture – today, the PIOX R Refractometer belongs to the most developed Processrefractometers worldwide and is widely used in many industries.

The new FLUXUS G608 portable gas flow meter is based on the widely used, highly reliable and versatile G601, but has been specifically engineered for its use within hazardous areas and is covered by ATEX certification.

It is the ideal solution for gas flow measurement in potentially explosive areas, may it be for a temporary replacement of a stationary flow meter, check metering or service operations. Due to its certification, users are not anymore obliged to obtain a Hot Work Permit, making the access to ATEX Zones much easier and less time consuming.

The extremely resistant carbon fiber housing, together with the rugged transducer design, ensures a high impact protection as well as resistance against oil, water and many other liquids. The G608 portable gas flow meter shares the same efficient battery management as the G601, offering over 14 hrs. of remote measurement time.

Moreover, the measurement system can be fully set-up in less than five minutes due to the intuitive user guidance and the automatic transducer recognition. Its application range is unrivaled – from pipes as small as 7mm up to 1600mm inner diameter and temperatures ranging from -40°C to 200°C.

The G608 gas flow meter goes where other portable devices can’t

Being equipped with two flow channels, multiple Inputs and an integrated data logger with a serial interface, the portable gas flow meter is designed for direct usage in demanding environments, such as in the Upstream, Midstream and Downstream areaas well as in the processing industries and the energy sector.

As known from all FLEXIM flow meters, also the G608 features a highly precise bi-directional measurement at fast and even very slow gas flow rates over a wide dynamic measurement and pressure range and is not prone to temperature and zero drift, being fully compliant to ANSI/ASME regulations.

However, the G608 is not only safe, accurate and reliable, but also very compact and lightweight, offering the user to even carry the complete measuring system as personal luggage for Offshore visits.

   
 

FLUXUS G801 – The Offshore Gas Flow Meter

The FLUXUS G801 is the ideal ultrasonic gas flow meter for permanent installation in rough and hazardous Offshore environments

Similar in its technical features to the FLUXUS G800 gas flow meter, the especially robust FLUXUS G801 is completely seawater and seaspray-resistant and especially designed for applications found on Oil&Gas extraction platforms offshore.

The flow meter is encased in a Stainless Steel housing and can be operated by a magnet pen without opening the housing. It is certified for usage in potentially explosive areas(ATEX (IECEx) Zone 1).

The FLUXUS G801 gas flow meter allows for an inherently bi-directional gas flow measurement of operational and standard volume flows. As the transducers are mounted on the outside of the pipe wall, enclosed in the rugged stainless steelVARIOFIX C mounting fixture, the system does not suffer from wear, tear or clogging, can’t be a risk for leaks and will not cause any pressure drops inside the pipe.

Due to its matched and paired transducers as well as the internal temperature compensation (compliant to ANSI/ASME regulations) the measurement system is drift free and zero stable ensuring accurate readings. Moreover, as the transducers calibration data is automatically loaded by connecting the transducer to the transmitter, set-up times are reduced and precise, long-term stable results are provided.

The FLUXUS G601 portable gas flow meter measures the flow of nearly any gas using FLEXIM’s proven transit-time correlation technique.
Special ultrasonic Lamb and shear wave transducers are simply clamped onto the outside of the pipe, thus no cutting into the pipe or process interruption is required for installation.

The FLUXUS G601 portable gas flow meter allows for an inherently bi-directional gas flow measurement of operational and standard volume flows. As the transducers are mounted on the outside of the pipe wall, the system does not suffer from wear and tear or clogging, can’t be a risk for leaks and will not cause any pressure drops inside the pipe. It is the ideal tool for servicing and maintenance activities, the control and auditing of measurement points not covered by permanent meters, or even the temporary replacement of permanently installed gas flow meters.

Though featuring an ergonomic design, which offers simple handling and maximum ease of use, the G601 was designed to easily withstand rough industrial environments. Portable flow measurement of Compressed Air andBTU‘s

Compressed Air has many advantages in modern production processes and its nearly unimaginably to think working without.

Nevertheless, it is one of the most costly forms of energy as more than 90% of the energy used to created pressurized air is forgiven as heat, mechanical and other losses. Furthermore, as it is invisible to the eye and often distributed over long piping infrastructures, leakages are unfortunately common, thus increasing costs even more.

Strategies to reduce the amount required and making aware about leakages exist, but real technical measures are only slowly implemented – this also because proper measuring devices were lacking until now.

The FLUXUS® G601 CA Energy compressed air flow meter is the answer to it and the ideal solution for monitoring tasks!

The FLUXUS G601 CA Energy is based on the very successful G601 portable gas flow meter and transfers all the exceptional characteristics known from it  into a new category.

The FLUXUS G601 CA Energy is the ideal tool for the operator to survey whole pressurized air infrastructures, balancing the facilities, measuring on nearly every individual leg, determining the efficiency of compressors and last, not least, quantify and localize leakages.

It measures at pipes with an inner diameter of DN50 to DN 300 and from 5 bar inner pressure upwards (for plastic pipes measurements can be undertaken at atmospheric pressure and below) by applying FLEXIM’s proven transit-time correlation technique. Special ultrasonic Lamb and shear wave transducers are simply clamped onto the outside of the pipe, thus no cutting into the pipe or process interruption is required for installation – especially a benefit for facilities where pipes can’t be depressurizes easily. It also means, that the flow meter can never be a potential source for leakages itself – a problem that  conventional flow meters technologies are often facing!

Moreover, as the G601 CA Energy flow meter is highly mobile and flexible, it can be used nearly anywhere  – punctual measurements at the same spot everytime are thus a thing of the past.

The FLUXUS G601 CA Energy not only offers the flow measurement of pressurized air, but also the monitoring of adjacent applications that are common in Facility Management, such as the quantification of energy balances at heating or cooling plants and looking for lost BTU‘s.

Its accuracy and reliability, that derives from the F/G601 Energy, is unrivaled – not only because of the carefully matched and paired 4-Wire PT100/1000 temperature probes or the enthalpy curves that are programmed into the transmitter.

As the transducers are mounted on the outside of the pipe wall in rugged mounting fixtures, the system does not suffer from wear and tear or clogging, can’t be a risk for leaks and will not cause any pressure drops inside the pipe.

The FLUXUS G800 is the ideal gas flow meter for permanent installation in potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX (IECEx) approved for Zone 1). With its flameproof housing (IP66) the gas flow meter is designed for industrial use in harsh environments such as ingas processing plants and natural gas extraction or the chemical and petrochemical industry.

Designed for the needs of the Water Utilities sector

The FLUXUS ADM 5107 is FLEXIM’s solution for many flow metering applications found in the water and wastewater sector and adjacent industries. As FLEXIMs basic andeconomic alternative, the ADM 5107 offers the same benefits in terms of accuracy and reliability as its bigger brothers, the FLUXUS ADM 7407 and ADM 8027.

The FLUXUS ADM 5107 offers a precise bi-directional flow measurement over a wide turndown ratio and not only at high, but especially at  low flow velocities due to its matched and paired transducer pairs, offering a superior zero stability, and the superior measurement algorithms embedded in the flow computer. With its water-tight IP67 transducers and a permanent coupling due, it is also thought for outside use at drinking water pipelines or similar applications and is virtually maintenance free. Especially here, at pipe diameters up to 2500 mm, it is a better and much more cost effective alternative to other measurement technologies, such as MIDs.

As of its high repeatability, the FLUXUS ADM 5107 also offers the possibility for leak detection when placing multiple measurement systems at one pipeline. Especially at night, when temperatures are more even and only low flow velocities are common in drinking water lines, leakages can clearly be identified and such reading transferred to a process control system.

The ideal retrofit solution for water pipes

As a non-intrusive clamp on flow meter, the FLUXUS ADM 5107 is the ideal solution for retrofitting in existing networks without interruption of supply lines.Thanks to the clamp-on technology, no cutting or welding work is needed to mount the transducers on the pipe. During installation, the flow meter’s user interface is automatically adapted to the connected transducers and no zeroing is necessary. Water is already pre-selected as medium and it’s physical properties are stored in the flowmeter’s memory.

In most cases only the pipe’s outer diameter and wall thickness as well as the water temperature has to be entered in order to start the measurement. The commissioning work is thus reduced to a minimum. On request, the instrument can even be pre-configured at the factory.

FLEXIM also offers flow meter solutions for complete pipeline balancing, where the flow meter can be buried underground. IP68 transducers and VARIOFIX mounting fixtures guarantee a long lifetime even under such difficult conditions. The measurement system of choice for such applications is the FLUXUS ADM 7407.

 

FLUXUS® ADM 7407 – The ultrasonic flow meter for permanent installation

The FLUXUS® ADM 7407 is FLEXIM’s flow meter for permanent installation in nearly any liquid flow metering application – especially in the industrial environment. Its non-intrusive measurement technology ensures a precise bi-directional, highly dynamic flow measurement over a wide turndown ratio.

Enclosed in a robust metal field housing, the ADM 7407 flow meter is completely water-tight and designed for usage in rough environments. As the transducers are mounted on the outside of the pipe wall in rugged VARIOFIX mounting fixtures, the system does not suffer from wear and tear or clogging, can’t be a risk for leaks and will not cause any pressure drops inside the pipe. Process interruptions or even production stops are a thing of the past with the ADM 7407.

Due to its matched and paired transducers as well as the internal temperature compensation (compliant to ANSI/ASME regulations), the measurement system is drift free and zero stable ensuring accurate readings. Moreover, as the transducer calibration data is automatically loaded by connecting the transducer to the transmitter the set-up times are significantly reduced. As of its exceptional dual-uP technology, the high number of measuring cycles per second and the adaptive signal processing, the FLUXUS® ADM 7407 flow meter produces stable and reliable measuring results even under the most difficult conditions.

The ADM 7407 flow meter is the ideal instrument for monitoring chemically aggressive, toxic or just media that you want to keep inside the pipe.

The liquid flow meter can be applied at inner pipe diameters ranging from 6 mm up to 12 m (no limitations on pipe wall thickness or material) and media temperatures from -40°C up to 200°C (-160° up to 400°C with the WaveInjector mounting fixture). The measurement is pressure independent and can take place on pipes of almost any material and on almost any liquid.

With up to two measurement channels, the FLUXUS ADM 7407 permanent liquid flow meter can be applied to difficult measurement points where other meters fail and is completely unaffected by viscosity, composition and toxicity of the medium itself as well as dust and humidity on the pipe wall outside. Due to innovative Hybrid trek Modeimplemented in the flow computer, also liquids containing a high content of solid particles or gaseous loads can accurately be metered.

Further, with its wide range of electrical inputs and outputs, the FLUXUS ADM 7407 flow meter can handle a variety of process parameters within liquid flow metering applications. The FLUXUS® ADM 7907 is the 19″ inch rack version of the highly versatile FLUXUS ADM 7407 liquid flow meter.

Internally identical to the FLUXUS ADM 7407, its non-intrusive measurement technology ensures a precise bi-directional, highly dynamic flow measurement over a wide turndown ratio. As the transducers (available also as ATEX and FM approved versions) are mounted on the outside of the pipe wall and are enclosed in the stainless steelVARIOFIX mounting fixtures, the system does not suffer from wear and tear or clogging, can’t be a risk for leaks and will not cause any pressure drops inside the pipe. The transmitter itself, as a Rack version, can be situated in a control cabinet at quiet a distance from the actual measurement point and will be connected through junction boxes.

Due to its matched and paired transducers as well as the internal temperature compensation (compliant to ANSI/ASME regulations), the measurement system is drift free and zero stable ensuring highly accurate readings. Moreover, as the transducer calibration data is automatically loaded by connecting the transducer to the transmitter the set-up times are significantly reduced.

The FLUXUS ADM 8027 is FLEXIM’s permanent flow meter for explosion hazard environments (being ATEX (IECEx) approved for usage in zones 1 and 2).
With its rugged, flameproof and water-tight field-enclosure, the flow meter – which can easily be operated by a magnetic pen without having open the housing – is especially designed for its usage in rough industrial environments such as in Chemical and Petrochemical plants or Refineries.

The FLUXUS ADM 8027 flow meter allows for an inherently bi-directional flow measurement of volumetric and mass flow rates of nearly any liquid media – ranging form crude oil to refined products – and can be equipped with various outputs for a sophisticated process control. The FLUXUS ADM 8127 flow meter for liquids is FLEXIM’s solution for explosion hazard environments Offshore (being ATEX (IECEx) approved for usage in zones 1 and 2).

Compressed Air has many advantages in modern production processes and its nearly unimaginably to think working without.

Nevertheless, it is one of the most costly forms of energy as more than 90% of the energy used to created pressurized air is forgiven as heat, mechanical and other losses. The FLUXUS BTU / Energy meter allows the easy determination of the energy flow in a system.

With temperature measurements made at the inlet and at the outlet of a system as well as accurate flow measurement at the outlet , the BTU flow meter calculates the energy flow within that system. All this is done with temperature and flow measurement devices mounted on the outside of the pipe.

The FLUXUS BTU / Energy meter will display the actual energy flow through the system, and if needed, totalize the heat flow in order to obtain the energy quantity.
